Leal da Câmara House Museum

Image

The Leal da Câmara House Museum is located in the final home of Mestre Leal da Câmara, where he lived between 1930 until his death in 1948.

The Sintra City Council acquired the House Museum in 1965, after it was donated by the Master's widow upon her death, and has since provided the population with a unique cultural display of the artist's life experience.

The building had once belonged to Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the Marquis of Pombal, when it was used as a stopping point for changing horses, located between Quinta da Granja do Marquês (Terrugem, Sintra) and the Oeiras Palace.

In the 19th century, it served as a Field Hospital for the Portuguese troops during the French Invasions.

The building currently housing the Núcleo dos Saloios at the Leal da Câmara House Museum owes its existence to Jorge Segurado who, in 1919, designed a building to house the Portuguese Ethnographic Museum that would be set up in Flanders, and which Leal da Câmara then remodelled into a primary school.
Since 21 July 2003, the space displays the artists' Saloio collections.
