The Renato de Albuquerque Foundation is dedicated to Chinese ceramics, housing the prestigious Albuquerque Collection, which is of museum standard and comprises over 2,600 pieces acquired by the Brazilian businessman over six decades. This collection is considered one of the most important private collections in the world of Chinese porcelain from the Ming and Qing dynasties, both imperial and export.
Some of the pieces in the collection have already been exhibited at internationally renowned institutions, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) and the Victoria & Albert Museum (London), among others.
The Foundation aims to celebrate the cultural and commercial links between East and West, with Portugal as a key historical player. The permanent exhibitions will take an innovative curatorial approach, highlighting the global impact of Chinese porcelain and deepening the public's understanding of its historical and artistic importance.
The old Quinta de São João (São João Villa), which belonged to the family, was renovated and expanded to accommodate the wide range of activities of the Albuquerque Foundation. It also has a specialised library, a concept store that displays and sells works by Portuguese ceramists, and a café with a terrace overlooking the extensive gardens and landscapes of Sintra.
