This estate’s history dates back to the beginning of the 18th century. The main house was built in 1720 and, surprisingly, managed to survive the 1755 earthquake due to its granite structure from the Sintra Mountains.
In 1903, it stopped producing wine, but 100 years later, the "most western vineyards in Europe" were replanted and the wine cellar was modernized.
The wines of Casal de Santa Maria are the result of the expression of nature and the unique terroir that surrounds the vineyards, which are located on the coastline of the Sintra Mountains.
Casal Sta. Maria is located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Sintra Mountains, receives a maritime weather influence with cool nights and foggy mornings accompanied by ocean breezes. The soils are clay loam with large granite formations, rich in organic matter, due to the operation of the Arabian Horse Stud Farm during the 1970s and 1980s.
The result from this terroir is wines that remember the sea, very aromatic, fresh, mineral, elegant, balanced and with particularly strong salty notes. These wines have great ageing potential, are complex and with character, expressing well the unique terroir of the Sintra Mountains.
