Sanctuary of Peninha

Image

Located at 488 meters of altitude, the Sanctuary of Peninha is part of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park and includes a set of buildings classified as Property of Public Interest (Decree nº 129/77 of 29 September).

When the sky is clear, the view reaches Cabo Espichel and Arrábida Hills and, to the north, Cabo Carvoeiro and Berlengas. Closer, you can see Cabo da Roca and Cascais.

Place of worship since ancient times and heir to a long magic-religious tradition, shrouded in legends that have crossed generations of pilgrims.

Dating back to the 17th century, the building of the Chapel of Our Lady of Penha (Peninha) resulted by popular devotion, following an alleged apparition of Our Lady to a poor shepherdess. This architectural set also comprises the secular hermitage of Saint Saturnin and an enigmatic romantic-revivalist palace built in 1918 by António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro (owner of Quinta da Regaleira).
