This man-made waterfall is located in the Monserrate Palace Gardens, one of the most important English gardens and landscapes outside the British isles, and one of the most beautiful Romantic landscapes created in Portugal. William Beckford fell in love with Sintra, subletting Monserrate from Gerard de Visme in 1794. Beckford ordered the construction of artificial dams to ensure a steady supply of water to the waterfall.
